What are some easy ways to be kind? Say hi to your friend. Be nice to your puppy. How about sharing your cookies or crackers? From taking turns to saying you’re sorry, the simplest of gestures, offered in Jane Cowen-Fletcher’s lovable style, show that being kind feels so good that even a baby will want to try it. #kindnessmatters

The WICHITA WAR DANCER is coming to share his dance and culture with our community Wed., June 7 at 7:00 pm in the King Center, 310 Main Street, Jetmore, KS.

KEEPERS OF THE CULTURE
Greg Victors is a world champion war dancer who belongs to the Ponca and Tohono O’odham Nations. He came from a family that taught him to preserve and share his Native American heritage. “If you preserve your culture, it’ll take you places you’ve never been,” Victors said. He grew up on a reservation in Arizona and competitive war dancing has taken him all over the world.

By day, Victors is a Special Education teacher at Haysville. His sister, Ponka-We Victors, has served on the Kansas State House of Representatives for over a decade. Victor’s heritage comes from two different tribes, the Ponca Nation, whose members are on The Great Plains, and the Tohono O'odham Nation, whose people are from the Southwest.

The dance of his Native people has been passed down from generation to generation-from the chanting to the beat of the drums. It was a dance that honored war horses, which were their brave and courageous partners in battle, as well as the buffalo. The Southern Plains War Dance originated from the Ponca Nation and honors the warrior’s deep respect and love for all of God’s creation.

Just as the war dance itself is authentic, so is the war dancer’s colorful regalia. A regalia is the opposite of a costume, according to Victors, because it is his true identity. The full-dress finery of the war dancer involved a long process of hunting and trapping the animals whose quills, feathers and fur he acquired, and many hours of continuous beading and sewing. The special clothes weigh 60 pounds and took more than three years to assemble, “bead by bead, feather by feather.”

Please join us for the Wichita War Dancer’s performance Wednesday, June 7 at 7:00 pm in the King Center. Learn more about Indigenous culture, enjoy Native dancing, educational descriptions, opportunity for Q and A, and audience participation.

This is the library’s amazing Summer Reading Kick-Off event the whole family will enjoy. A free community hot dog supper begins at 6:00 pm on June 7, prior to the event, and all are welcome.

On a warm spring morning, a hare and a hedgehog become friends. Even though the hedgehog is prickly, and the hare is soft, they respect and enjoy what makes each of them unique. Seasons change and it's time for the hedgehog to hibernate. When the hedgehog awakes from his winter sleep, he is reunited with his best friend, and learns the hare has burrowed a big home that they can both share together the next winter, so neither of them have to be alone. Our 2023 Summer Reading program celebrates unity, kindness and friendship. <3
